Pontiac Fiero Door Skin Washer Set
The Fiero’s outer door skin is mounted with bolts and plastic washers that secure the skin without damaging the panel. Over time those washers become brittle, cracked or lost. Replacing them keeps your door skins secure and properly aligned.
Before you begin: park on a level surface and open the door fully. You do not need to remove the door or the skin to replace the washers.
Tools required
- T-30 Torx driver or socket
- 4mm hex driver
- Optional: blue thread locker
Included
- 14× replacement door skin washers
- 14× stainless M6-1 × 16mm tapered bolts
- 1× 4mm ¼” drive bit
- Locate the door skin fasteners
- The outer skin is held on by Torx screws with plastic washers along the inside front and rear door edges.
- On most Fieros there are about 7 fasteners per door.
- Remove the door skin bolts
- Using a T-30 Torx bit, carefully remove the bolts holding the door skin in place.
- Remove old or damaged washers
- Slide out or pry off the old washers from behind the bolt heads.
- Clean any debris or rust from the mounting areas with a rag.
- Install the new washers
- Place the new washers where the old ones were — between the bolt head and the painted door skin.
- Make sure each washer seats flat against the skin to prevent damage when tightening.
- Reinstall the bolts
- Thread the M6 bolts back into their original locations through the new washers.
- Tighten each snugly — do not overtighten, as this can crack the washer or damage the door skin.
- Optionally apply a small dab of blue thread locker to prevent loosening from vibration.
- Final check
- Make sure the skin is flush and secure across the whole panel.
- Close the door and check for proper alignment and no rattles.
Work one at a time. Go from one end of the door to the other, replacing a single washer at a time — the skin never shifts on you that way.
Notes. Replacing all washers on both doors during a restoration is recommended. Inspect bolt threads for corrosion while they’re out and replace any that are questionable. These washers are specific to the Fiero door skin design — do not substitute metal washers.
